So you want to adopt a pug? Are you ok with having a lazy roommate that has selective hearing, sheds like crazy, begs for your food, and snores? If the answer is yes, read on!
Pugs are POPULAR! And anyone that has ever had a pug in their life knows exactly why. They are the most loving little clowns. It’s no wonder we get dozens of applications to adopt each pug that becomes available. And while we wish every pug that comes to us was perfect, the reality of rescue is that most are not. Many of the pugs in our care come from shelters and we have no history on them at all. Others come from loving homes that found themselves unable to afford veterinary care. Some come to us because of behavior issues like marking or food aggression. We love them all regardless of their age, health or behavior but we also recognize that not every pug is right for every family.
It is our job to first and foremost advocate for the dogs’ needs, which is why we have very thorough application processes. We are a foster based rescue and know our rescue pugs well. Each pug has individual needs, energy levels, health concerns, and personalities that are thoroughly evaluated while in their foster homes. It is not our policy to adopt to the first adoption application, but rather to whomever will be the best home fit for the dog based on these evaluations.
Each application is carefully considered to create a match that best suits the dog’s needs. Thorough and thoughtful responses on your application will aid in the process, but please be patient as we are all volunteers. We value quality and consistent vet care, strong references, and thoughtful responses to questions. We also value applicants that appreciate our process. It takes patience to go through rescue for your next pet, and it is not for everyone. If you are looking to adopt a companion immediately, please visit your local shelter. They are full of amazing dogs and most can come home with you the same day! We are all here to complete one mission – to save dogs and give them stable homes for the rest of their lives.
A few tips for Pug Pals applicants:
- Renters – Please provide contact information for your landlord so that we may confirm that adding a dog to your family does not violate your lease agreement.
- Notify your references – We require each applicant provide three non-related references on their application. Please let your references know to expect a call or text from a volunteer with Pug Pals. We cannot proceed without contacting references so the easier they are to get in touch with, the faster we can move things along.
- Notify your veterinarian – Some vet offices will not share information about the care they have provided your pets without your authorization. Giving them a head’s up that we will be calling will help minimize delays in processing your application.
- Home Environment – Do a video walk-through of your home and yard. If we are unable to visit your home in person, we will ask that you provide us a video walk through of your home and yard to verify that the home is safe for the rescue pug.
- Do not get discouraged – Adopting from a rescue can be a long process, so be prepared for it to take time. But once you have found the perfect match for your family, whether it be with PugPals or any other rescue, the wait will seem well worth it!
Please be advised that Pug Pals Rescue reserves the right to refuse any applicant for any reason if we feel the needs of the dog will not be properly met or the adoption is not in the best interest of the dog.
